Epilogue

Jill Saunders stayed on at UC, and built the top sports psychology, and eventually sports medicine center in the country, with patients ranging from talented little leaguers up to elite professional athletes. She married a lawyer whose raw intelligence and quick tongue were a match for her own. They eventually had three girls, none of whom were ever subject to anything more than time outs for poor behavior, Jill having become convinced that spanking between consenting adults was fine, but spanking and children were far too volatile a mixture.

Trish and Eric are happily married. Eric's recovery was nearly complete, but his damaged knee prevented him from ever again participating in elite athletic competition. He and Trish both joined the UC Athletics Department as assistant coaches in track and field. Trish stayed on as a coaching assistant for two years before resigning to go back to school and get her MD. She too studied psychiatry and did her residency work under Jill, then stayed on at UC to help build the program into the powerhouse it eventually became. Eric stayed on as assistant to Janice Richards, and together they built the UC track and field program into a perennial championship favorite. Janice moved on to head up another program, and Eric took over as Head Coach.

From that day forward, the heated competition between their two programs became one of the most notable rivalries in collegiate athletics, and was only slightly outshone by the annual post-meet party hosted by the losing team, and to which at least 3 local police riot squads received tongue in cheek invitations. Trish and Eric split their time between busy work schedules and a rambunctious twin boy and girl. Although it's really too soon to be certain, early reports indicate that Team USA Olympic track and field odds are looking pretty good for 2045. And yes, it has been noted by various observers that whenever either Trish or Eric has a particularly stressful day, Eric seems to have some difficulty sitting down the next day. He puts it down to an old football injury, a claim which invariably makes his old friend T-Rex roll his eyes.

And Janice? As has been previously stated, she built an extremely successful coaching career, both at UC and at her follow-on job. She continues to stay close to Jill, Eric and Trish. She and her family often celebrate holidays with the Saunders clan, and her kids and theirs all consider themselves to be cousins in the same extended family. Yes, she did eventually find a suitable husband, a well known medical researcher and department head at Janice's school. Does she give him a good dose of the paddle on occasion? Well, that's a whole 'nother story.
